Creating a soothing classroom environment for your students is more important now than ever. In this blog post, we’ll discuss five elements that can help you create a soothing classroom environment, from the big-picture items like furniture to the little details like fragrances and colors. Let’s get started!

Furniture Arrangement Calms a Space
The layout of your classroom is key when creating a calm atmosphere. Be sure the seating arrangement allows for easy conversation and collaboration between students. Allow plenty of space between desks and chairs, as overcrowding can be distracting and uncomfortable. You may also wish to incorporate soft seating areas (like beanbags or floor cushions) that are inviting while providing an area to relax.
Here are some of my students' favorite pieces:

Lighting Creates a Soothing Classroom
Good lighting can greatly impact how we feel in any space, including the classroom! Aim for bright but subtle lighting options to avoid harsh glare or dimness that can cause fatigue. If possible, install adjustable light sources to adjust the brightness throughout the day based on student needs. Natural light from windows is also beneficial; however, use blinds or curtains in case direct sunlight overwhelms you during class.

Fragrance Soothes the Classroom
We often underestimate how much our senses affect us, particularly smell. Using aromatherapy diffusers with natural scents such as lavender or chamomile can help create a calming atmosphere without being overpowering or intrusive. If you cannot use scent diffusers, consider placing bowls of potpourri around the room.

Colors Affect Our Moods
It goes without saying that colors affect our moods—and this applies just as much in classrooms as anywhere else! Opt for colors in nature, such as blue, green, and earth tones, as these are most likely to create calm vibes within your classroom walls. You may also consider incorporating some natural elements, such as plants which will bring life into your room while maintaining peace and tranquility.

Music Creates a Vibe
You can also use music to create a calm atmosphere in your classroom. First, it is important to identify the most effective ways to integrate music in the classroom. Music has been shown to improve cognitive performance on simple tasks but can negatively affect performance on complex tasks. It is important to listen to calming music rather than aggressive music that gets students riled up. Teachers can effectively integrate music into classrooms if they consider these elements.

Sometimes you want to get your classroom energized for learning, too. Some of my favorite sources for finding calm and energizing music in your classroom include:
- Relaxing music
- The Green Book of Songs
- Flocabulary
- GoNoodle
- Create playlists on Spotify or iTunes
A calm classroom environment conducive to learning is essential for teachers everywhere, so ensure your classroom has all the elements to create a soothing classroom environment! From furniture placement to color choice, there are so many ways you can ensure your students have a soothing space where they feel comfortable and ready to learn each day. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to creating the perfect tranquil classroom setting!
